Once again, it’s that time when we talk about how quickly the year has gone. This often proves to be very true as we get busier with the demands of the current business environment. As 2016 comes to an end, here are a few questions I would encourage Green Seal clients to consider: What are you doing to promote your sustainability story? Are you taking full advantage of the resources available to you to market and promote your Green Seal-certified products and services? Green Seal offers tools and programs to make this easier for our clients. Here are three things that can be done in the New Year for a successful 2017. (more…)
At the biggest Earth Day celebration in the world, Earth Day Texas 2016, two sustainability leaders—a nonprofit ecolabel and a windows manufacturer, discussed why consumers rely on them to make smart purchasing decisions. Green Seal’s President & CEO Dr. Arthur Weissman and Renewal by Andersen of Dallas’ General Manager Chris Pound shared the stage on April 23rd in Dallas, Texas and discussed the power of a credible ecolabel. The Greenbuild conference was loaded with opportunities for us this year. Not only was it conveniently held in our fair city (DC) many of our staff could attend, but we also got to visit with several current clients exhibiting at the expo. And as a USGBC board member, I was able to represent Green Seal at many of the leadership activities as well. Here are some highlights!
The opening plenary was introduced by HUD Secretary Julian Castro, who said that, “green means good health and more wealth”. Rick Fedrizzi, President of USGBC, echoed the Secretary’s sentiment, saying the environment and the economy are deeply connected. This seemed to be a theme for the week, maybe because Rick’s new book is about how “profit saves the planet.” He quoted Francis Perkins, the first woman to hold a US cabinet position, who said, “There is work to be done, so we do it.” Another Perkins quote I like: “Being a woman has only bothered me in climbing trees.” (more…)
I just got back from exhibiting and speaking at Earth Day Texas, April 24th through 26th in Dallas. Touted as the biggest Earth Day event on the planet, it didn’t disappoint. It was a combination green festival, county fair (it was, after all, held at the Texas Fair Grounds), and networking conference with a wide variety of activities for both exhibitors and attendees. The mission of Earth Day Texas is to provide a forum for businesses, non-profits, academic institutions, and government agencies to network and engage the public in environmental topics.
Several Green Seal clients were represented and our booth in the Automobile Building sat right between Renewal by Andersen and ServiceMaster Eagle Maintenance Co. Distributor Jan-Pak was close by, represented Clorox, Diversey, and Georgia Pacific, and Harvard University – Division of Continuing Education, a cleaning service client, had a booth in Centennial Hall. What a beautiful day for an expo! Green Seal’s newest family member, Mac Clevenger, and I trundled down Eye Street with our booth-on-wheels and promotional wares. This would be a very consumer-facing event — a shift from our usual industrial and institutional (“I&I”) audience — and we were primed with messages and facts especially for these individuals.

Our gracious and well-prepared host, Sonal Patel of the World Bank’s Corporate Responsibility Program, had arranged prize giveaways and three kinds of legit, amazing hot chocolate, which definitely seemed to boost participation!
GS was one of about 20 exhibitors — including the Anacostia Watershed Green Roofs team at the booth next door — and we all saw a steady flow of WB employees and visitors during the three-hour event.
It was satisfying to see the light bulb go on when people realized that their building was cleaned by Green Seal-certified products, and to know that we’d planted a few seeds that might prompt these individuals to make their world a bit greener.
Quote of the day: “I mean, really… how many Environmental Science Ph.D.s does it take to turn off a light switch!?”

These are the words of the popular superhero that graced our television screens in the early 1990s in “Captain Planet and the Planeteers.” While Captain Planet may have been, for a vast majority of children that were drawn to it, an ordinary cartoon show, its message and legacy were very pertinent. That is especially true today, at a time when climate change and its accompanying issues of sustainability are some of the truly defining issues of our time.
In this blog post, I will explain why, now that we have seen a resurgence in the comic superhero genre in popular culture, there needs to be an icon in the marketplace akin to the Captain Planet of old. I believe such an icon could become a positive symbol for our society just as current superheroes are for our own entertainment; I will start my explanation with a brief background of the show.
